Kepulauan Seribu National Park

Kepulauan Seribu is one of Indonesia's marine nature conservation areas and it is located 45 km north of Jakarta.

The 78 coral islands, both large and small, with an average altitude of not more than 3 m asl, form a chain. Hundreds of years ago, the islands were formed upon colonies of dead coral. These colonies initially grew on shallow sea beds; their upper layers breached the surface and were weathered. Later, pioneer plants such as bushes and several tree species began to grow on the coral. The surface of the islands is quite different from soil-covered ground, and this is reflected in their diverse plant and animal life.

In general, the plants that grow in the Park are dominated by coastal species like coconut palm (Cocos nucifera), pandan (Pandanus sp.), cemara laut (Casuarina equisetifolia), cangkudu (Morinda citrifolia), butun (Barringtonia asiatica), mangrove (Bruguiera sp.), sukun (Artocarpus altilis), ketapang (Terminalia cattapa), and kecundang (Cerbena adollam).

Sea vegetation commonly found in the Park consists of seaweed divisions like Rhodophyta, Chlorophyta and Phaeophyta as well as classes of sea grasses like Halimeda sp., Padina sp., Thalasia sp., Sargasum sp., and Caulerpa sp.

The dominant animals in the Park include 54 sea biota species which form part of the coral reef ecosystem, 144 species of fish, 2 species of giant clam, 6 species of sea grass, sea worms of various colours and 17 species of coastal bird.

This Park forms a hatching site for hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), and green turtle (Chelonia mydas). The hawksbill turtle is an endangered species and is rarely found in other waters. These turtles are bred on Pramuka Island. This activity is aimed at recovering the turtle population, which had almost reached extinction. Breeding activities include egg hatching in a semi-natural way and caring for the baby turtles till they are ready to be released into their natural habitat.

Most coastal areas of this Park are surrounded by mangrove forest, where iguanas, golden ring snakes and pythons can be found.

The Kepulauan Seribu chain is a place of enchanting natural beauty. The symphony of calls of the creatures on these small green islands, combined with the sound of thundering waves and golden sunshine at dusk bring a sense of calm and traJustify Fullnquillity to all those who visit the Park.

Sunda Kelapa

Sunda Kelapa, better known as Pasar Ikan (meaning fish market) is located at the mouth of the Ciliwung river. It was formerly the harbor town of Sunda Kelapa where the Portuguese traded with the Hindu Kingdom of Pajajaran in the early 16th century. Just a 10-minute walk north from Taman Fatahillah in Old Batavia, the old port of Sunda Kelapa has more sailing ships - the magnificent Makassar schooners - than you ever thought existed. Large wooden ships enter here to release their cargo. These ships look much older then they are. These brightly painted ships are an important means of transport and freight delivery between the capital and the outer islands. They also provide one of the most spectacular sights in Jakarta. Decades ago they used to bring spices from the other islands to ship to Europe , mainly the Netherlands. Nowadays these ships contain wood. For a fee, old men in row boats will take you out for a closer look at the ships. Don't hit your head on the mooring ropes or gangplanks, and don't be too surprised if you get hit from above by rubbish thrown from the decks. If you get out as far as the Pulau Seribu (Thousand Islands) in the Bay of Jakarta, you'll probably see some of these majestic schooners under sail.
Pasar Ikan - Fish Market (Jl. Pasar Ikan) - Arrive early in the morning (from 3am) for fresh fish and hustle and bustle. You can buy fresh seafood from the Fish Market and ask the cooks in restaurants in Muara Angke area to cook them to your liking. Try the side streets for an amazing variety of goods from ships chandlery to stuffed turtles and sealing wax.

Nearby Sunda Kelapa Harbor, you can find Harbor-Master Tower (Menara Syahbandar), Maritime Museum (Museum Bahari), Fatahillah Museum, Wayang Puppet Museum, Arts Museum and Beos Station.

Other things to do and see:
# Climb Harbor-Master Tower (Menara Syahbandar) to view Jakarta from the top.
# Watch the ships loading and unloading the cargo in the harbor.
# Buy fishing apparels to fish in this area, or buy fresh seafood from the market.
# Take pictures in Beos Station.
# Visit the museums.
# Attend the events done by the museum--such as open theaters portraying people in the olden times.
# Joining wayang workshops in the museum.

JAKARTA - BATAVIA

Monas JakartaPhoto: Monas Jakarta

Jakarta - Indonesia's bustling capital, and home to over 8 million people (although estimates do vary greatly) - dates back to the fifth century AD. The first confirmed record of inhabitants in the area comes from a Tugu inscription which refers to a community of the Tarumanegara kingdom living along the coast near what later become known as Sunda Kelapa. The city was officially founded in 1527, when the harbour town of Sunda Kelapa was renamed Jayakarta (meaning great victory) by the conquering prince Fatahillah but this was later changed to Batavia before becoming Jakarta.

For tourist, Jakarta offers a treasure trove of attractions, shopping, museums, golf, fine dining and nightlife that have made it one of Southeast Asia's best-kept secrets. An economic boom in the mid-nineties led to the construction of dozens of first-class hotels, some of which are rated as the best in the region - good news for business travelers to the capital who can have their pick of Jakarta's 20,000 hotel rooms at cut-price rates.

Another highlight of any trip to Jakarta is the food. The city offers a fantastic range of restaurants with every type of cuisine from Brazilian to Turkish to Korean, and everything in between.

The accompanying map and listing is not meant as a definitive guide to the city. Hopefully it will give unfamiliar visitors an overview of some of the delights on offer. If in doubt, consult the concierge or front desk at your hotel.
