Komodo Bay

Komodo island is part of the Lesser Sunda chain of islands and forms part of the Komodo National Park.The park is located in between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. The park includes the three major islands; Komodo, Rinca and Padar, as well as numerous smaller islands creating a total surface area (marine and land) of 1817km (proposed extensions would bring the total surface area up to 2,321km2). Particularly notable here is the native Komodo dragon. In addition, the island is a popular destination for diving because of its high marine biodiversity, including whale sharks, ocean sunfish, manta rays, eagle rays, pygmy seahorse, false pipefish, clown frogfish, nudibranchs, blue-ringed octopus, sponges, tunicates, and coral reefs. These habitats harbor more than 1,000 species of fish, some 260 species of reef-building coral, and 70 species of sponges. Dugong, sharks, manta rays, at least 14 species of whales, dolphins, and sea turtles also make Komodo National Park their home.

Komodo - Primeval Dragon, The Predator

Komodo (Varanus Komodoensis) is a giant reptile, which is also the highest predator in the food chain in his home habitat. It is believed to be the ancient reptile from dinosaur's age that still survives. With its maximum weight at 300 lbs and 10 ft long, these are the biggest lizards in the world. Now that they are dying out, it is important for everyone to keep them from extinction. Komodo island and its surrounding have the average temperature of 40 degrees Celsius which makes the perfect environment for Komodo to live and reproduce their offspring.


If you want to observe Komodo's characteristics and activities directly, you can visit Nusa Tenggara archipelago specially Komodo island, Rinca and Padar island which located around East Nusa Tenggara and Big Sumbawa.

How to Get There

While most visitors enter Komodo National Park (KNP) through the gateway cities of Labuan Bajo in the west of Flores or Bima in eastern Sumbawa, the departure point for your trip is actually Denpasar, Bali.

From Gateway Cities to Komodo National Park (KNP)
You can easily organize a shared boat charter by local boat from either ports at Labuan Bajo or Bima (Sape) to the two major points of access in the Park: Loh Liang (on Komodo Island) or Loh Buaya (on Rinca Island)
